Dad’s Wisdom
Reflecting the other day on my now-deceased father’s wisdom, and thought: What was the most insightful advice he gave me? I have narrowed it down to two of my most memorable.
“Just remember, no one is better than you, and you are no better than anyone else”. Even though a person may be better educated, talented, and wealthy or achieved stardom – they are no better than you. Forever hold your head up high.”
I try and live and use this every day, particularly in the working world where it is easy to feel intimidated. When upper management has approached me for, say a question, I used to tense up, but now I think to myself, “they are no better than I – they just have a higher position within the company”. I can’t say it always works, but it has helped.
“If you know you’ve done your very best every day, then no one can ask for more from you”.

My father’s advice was
1) you can do anything you want to do if you make up your mind to do it. Don’t let anyone tell you otherwise.
2) get an education. Life without an education means you’ll have to work a lot harder to get where you want to be.
Sometimes I remember, sometimes I don’t. It sounds like you’re actually remembering and doing quite well with your father’s advice.
Excellent wisdom from a very wise man.
As you say: sometimes you remember; sometimes you don’t. I really do try and remember the “nobody’s better than me” words. Helps alot.
My Dad was a wealthy of good advice… and one of his top 10 was the exact same you mentioned. Nobody is any better than you are….
Other favorites?
- Don’t let him make a fool out of you
- A guy always wants what he can’t have, and then he doesn’t want it anymore. (I found this to be true of both sexes, about 90% of the time.
